Sand away the existing finish. Your coffee table may be covered in paint, a clear sealer, or a stain and a clear sealer. Any type of finish can be sanded away to expose the raw wood underneath. If you hope to re-stain the wood or use a clear finish, you’ll need to sand the finish away completely. If you want to paint the coffee table instead, you can leave some splotches of the previous stain. For the fastest results on the coffee table’s surface, use an electric sander. Fitting the sander with coarse-grit sandpaper will help you cut through existing layers of paint or varnish quickly. For sanding along legs, molding, or other intricate or tough-to-reach places, use a sanding sponge. For very hard-to-reach areas, you can wrap a piece of sandpaper around your finger.

Remove all sanding dust from the coffee table. When you are finished sanding, use a vacuum with a hose attachment to remove as much sanding dust as possible from the coffee table. To ensure the removal of all sanding dust, moisten a rag with some mineral spirits and rub it across the coffee table.

Apply a clear coat of sealer to the coffee table. Whether or not you stained the coffee table, you’ll need to apply a coat of clear sealer to improve its appearance and protect the wood. The best option for achieving the durability needed in a coffee table is polyurethane, which can be applied using inexpensive foam brushes.

I realized that I have quite an accumulation of coffee tables. I have about five of them in my storage building, plus one at home that I bought from Goodwill a few weeks ago, and then the one that I rescued from the dumpster earlier this week. I need to do something with these, and I need inspiration for them! So I’ve gathered eight amazing coffee table makeovers that I really like. I hope they inspire you, too!

Simply beautiful. I think this already in a previous comment, but I’ll say it again…there’s just something about that white paint/stained wood combo that I find so appealing!! Maybe that’s what I should do with my dumpster coffee table. Since the top isn’t real wood, I could replace it like you did. Hmmm…now you’ve got me thinking…

Simple, solid wood coffee tables and more ornate, laminated ones all serve as repositories for drinks and snacks, and they accordingly need a durable finish to protect them. Nitrocellulose lacquer, sprayed from a compressed-air powered spray gun, provides this protection without masking the natural beauty of the wood. In order to get the best results, you must strip the old finish from the table and prepare the wood by careful sanding. Stripping, sanding and spraying are all procedures best done in a closed, well-ventilated space like a workshop, basement or garage, but you can also work outdoors on a calm day.

4) The next step was my FAVORITE!  I used the Mohawk Quick fill burn in stick to fill the deep gouges in the table.  Be sure that you have already completed step 3–you want your gouge to be as close to the color of your table as possible before you use the Quick fill burn in stick.  Here is a link to an instruction video tutorial.  Let me tell you, I think it’s even easier than the video makes it look.  You just use your wood burning tool to heat up the burn in stick, so that little melted drops drip off.  Then use the tip of your hot tool to make sure the melted liquid is in the gouge, making sure to tap it with your tool to get rid of any air bubbles.  Allow it to dry for at least 30 seconds.  Do not worry about any extra drips on your table–they will come right off!
